Whiplash: Symptoms, Recovery and Chiropractic Care
Neck pain after a collision or impact? Read about whiplash symptoms, how chiropractic supports recovery, and which signals need medical care — no referral.

What is whiplash?
Whiplash is a neck injury caused by a sudden, forceful movement of the head and neck, most often in a collision, but also after a fall or a hard blow. The cervical spine is moved powerfully back and forth in a short time, overstretching muscles, ligaments, and joints. Neck pain, stiffness, and headache can appear directly after the accident, but also hours or days later. Most people recover within two to three months; some have complaints for longer.
Because whiplash follows a trauma, medical assessment after the accident is always the first step. Once a doctor has ruled out serious injury, chiropractic care can help the recovery of the neck and spine. Your first visit costs €39 and requires no referral from your GP: after an intake and a full examination we assess whether chiropractic is appropriate in your situation. Most Dutch health insurers (partially) reimburse chiropractic care from the supplementary package, without touching your deductible.
Over 12 years, more than 2500 people with neck and back complaints came to us across Alphen aan den Rijn, Amersfoort, and Rotterdam; our average Google rating is 4.9 out of 5.
“Had a lot of trouble with my neck and shoulder after an accident; after a number of treatments it all worked out. Truly recommended.”
Symptoms of whiplash
Whiplash complaints can show up in different ways and sometimes only appear days after the accident. Do you recognize one or more of the following symptoms?
- neck pain and stiffness, often worse in the morning or after sitting still for a long time
- trouble turning or tilting the head
- headache, often from the neck or at the back of the head
- dizziness or a light feeling in the head
- tingling or a numb feeling radiating to the shoulders, arms, or hands
- concentration problems, irritability, or trouble sleeping

Check your coverageCauses of whiplash
Whiplash most often happens after a rear-end collision: the head is forcefully thrown backwards and forwards in a fraction of a second. A collision from the side, a fall, or a sports accident can also move the head so forcefully that the neck muscles and ligaments are overstretched. The injury itself does not have to be severe; the force of the movement says little about the complaints that follow. The movement of the neck and the sudden motion determine how much strain the cervical spine takes.
Recovery and chronic whiplash
Recovery after whiplash takes time, and it needs the right balance between rest and movement. Standing still for too long can make the stiffness worse; doing too much too quickly can bring the complaints back. Most people recover within a few months, but in some cases the complaints last for months or even years; we then speak of chronic whiplash or chronic pain. Recovery time depends on the severity of the injury. Starting to move early and picking up daily activities improves the chance of a good recovery, as the NHS also advises.
Our first step: a safety check after the accident
After an accident, safety comes first — and that also applies to our first visit. Because whiplash follows a trauma, medical assessment after the accident always belongs to the first step — we guide you through that. Also contact your GP afterwards if you have numbness or weakness in your arms or legs, a severe headache that gets worse, double vision or loss of balance, or complaints that have not improved after a week. Once serious injury is ruled out, we investigate whether chiropractic care can support your recovery: that is where we can help.
Your chiropractor is a primary-contact practitioner — whiplash like yours is what we assess daily, often before anyone else does. That is exactly what we're trained for: we screen for the rare serious causes of whiplash, and most of the time the answer is good news. Most neck pain and stiffness after an accident is harmless and well treatable. Only 3 signals are worth flagging on your own:
- numbness or weakness in your arms or legs after the accident
- a progressively worsening headache after the accident
- unconsciousness during the accident, or double vision and loss of balance
These deserve attention the same day. Contact us — we have 24/7 telephone availability; our front desk will notify the chiropractor right away if it looks urgent, and we'll assess your whiplash and tell you honestly whether it needs hospital care; you need no GP referral and no detour. Not sure? Talk it through with your GP or with us — but we're here, and we'll screen it with you.
Chiropractic treatment after whiplash
After medical assessment, chiropractic care can be a valuable step in recovery. A Cochrane review of manipulation and mobilisation for neck complaints, including whiplash, shows that this approach can reduce pain and improve mobility. A clinical guideline from the chiropractic profession also recommends manipulation and mobilisation for neck complaints after whiplash, alongside exercises and daily activities. That matches what we see in practice: many people notice their neck becomes more supple and the stiffness decreases.
Our treatment starts with a careful examination of the mobility of your neck and the tension in the neck muscles. With gentle, precise corrections we restore the movement of the neck joints and support natural healing. Alongside physiotherapy and exercises, chiropractic can be a fitting addition; which approach fits best, we discuss honestly during your first visit.
Most Dutch health insurers (partially) reimburse chiropractic care from the supplementary package, without touching your deductible. Your first visit costs €39; a single follow-up consultation costs €65 and a consultation in a recovery package €55. Check what your health insurance covers and the prices.
What you can do yourself after whiplash
Keep moving within the limits of the pain and try to continue your daily activities; a neck collar or prolonged rest does not help and actually makes the stiffness worse. Gentle driving, walking, and carefully moving the head are safe ways to keep the neck muscles supple. You can briefly discuss painkillers, such as paracetamol or ibuprofen, with your GP or pharmacist. Read more about neck and shoulder complaints; if complaints persist, book a first visit.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does a whiplash and accidents treatment cost?
Your first visit costs €39. Follow-up consultations are €65 (single) or €55 per consult in a package; child consultations are €35. Most Dutch health insurers (partially) cover chiropractic care from the supplementary package.
How long does recovery from whiplash take?
It differs greatly per person. Many people improve within weeks to months, but complaints such as neck pain, stiffness, or headache can last longer in some cases. The severity of the accident, your age, and how you deal with the complaints all play a part. During the first visit we look at your complaints and give you an honest estimate of the road ahead.
When should I go to the GP or emergency care first after an accident?
Seek medical help immediately if you were unconscious after the accident, feel numbness or weakness in your arms or legs, have a severe or worsening headache, or have double vision or loss of balance. These signals first require medical assessment; chiropractic care can follow afterwards, in consultation with your doctor.
Can a chiropractor help after whiplash?
Yes, many people with whiplash complaints benefit from chiropractic care, provided a doctor has first ruled out serious injury. The chiropractor examines the mobility of the cervical spine and uses gentle, targeted corrections to reduce tension and stiffness in the neck and shoulders. During the first visit we look at your complaints together and determine whether and how chiropractic care fits your recovery at this moment.
Is chiropractic treatment safe after whiplash?
Safety comes first, certainly after an accident. During your first visit we discuss your full medical history and perform a careful examination before starting any treatment. The techniques we use after whiplash are gentle and tailored to your situation. Complaints such as loss of strength or numbness in the arms or legs, a severe headache, or double vision first require medical assessment.
Why do I have headaches or a stiff neck after whiplash?
In whiplash the head suddenly moves forcefully back and forth, overstretching the muscles, ligaments, and joints of the neck. That tension can radiate to the head, which is why headache is a common result, and it makes the neck stiff. Gentle chiropractic corrections can reduce that tension and support the mobility of the cervical spine. Whether that fits your case, we assess during the first visit.
